This volume provides a new analysis of the East Greenland Caledonides, based on detailed modern investigations by international specialists, mainly under the auspices of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. The authors examine details of the west-directed thrust architecture and the involvement of reworked Archean to Neoproterozoic gneisses and metasediments; the older (ca. 930 Ma) and newer Caledonian (ca. 425 Ma) granites; Caledonian metamorphic patterns ranging from eclogite facies at the lowest structural levels through amphibolite and greenschist facies; and the stratigraphy of the passive-margin Neoproterozoic to Ordovician deposits formed at the west border of the Iapetus Ocean. Extensional collapse of the overthickened orogen led to accumulation of thick Devonian clastic successions. The data presented are directly relevant to adjacent parts of the Caledonian orogen, preserved in Scotland, Svalbard, and Scandinavia, as well as in the Appalachians. Accompanying this Memoir is a new 1:1,000,000 geological map of the Greenland Caledonide orogen.
