Position Title: Web Content Developer (Guest Scientist)

Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will be responsible for assisting Geologic Resources Division (GRD) staff and “Views of the National Parks” (Views) staff in collecting information (text, maps, tables, data, etc.) and illustrative/multimedia materials (interviews, images, panoramas, graphic illustrations, etc.) on geologic features and processes in national parks. Projects and programs could include such topics as: volcanism, glaciers, caves/karst, coastal geology, paleontology, rocks and minerals, and plate tectonics. In conjunction with Views and other NPS staff, the participant will translate technical information into a narrative form aimed at non-technical audiences. The participant will also assist GRD and Views staff who incorporate these written and illustrative materials for Internet and DVD implementation. The participant will also design and develop a geologic monitoring website that presents a searchable monitoring manual developed by GRD, case studies, photos, and monitoring protocols. Local travel to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science or area parks may be required. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Qualifications: Applicants must be senior-level undergraduate or graduate students in geology, environmental science, or other related field with a broad understanding of geologic concepts and terminology. Professionals are also welcome to apply. The participant should have excellent computer, oral and written communication skills, and an ability work well with others in a problem-solving capacity. Knowledge of web development software such as Dreamweaver is desirable, but not required.
Position Dates: April – October; 4 months; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $4000 (4 mo); a $600/mo housing allowance will be provided for participants that are from outside the Denver commuting area
Housing Available: The participant will be responsible for finding housing in the Denver/Lakewood, Colorado area. Numerous apartments / houses are available in the vicinity of the office and there is the possibility of sharing housing with other interns in the office.

Environment:
The position is based in an office setting in the Geologic Resources Division (GRD). GRD serves as the source for multidisciplinary expertise and guidance to parks and the NPS Directorate in support of their efforts to protect, restore, and understand the National Park System's geologic resources, and to protect resources from the adverse effects of mineral and energy development in and adjacent to parks. GRD is responsible for NPS policy formulation and coordination, planning, and oversight of science-based geologic resource management programs of broad Service-wide importance. The Division is involved in a wide range of geologic science and minerals management activities, coordinating Service-wide functions and providing parks with geoscience and regulatory expertise related to cave and karst systems, coastal and surficial geologic processes, disturbed land restoration, fossil resource management, geologic hazards, soil resource management, environmental effects of mineral extraction, mineral extraction technology and engineering, and associated NPS policy and legal authorities to enhance resource management decisions.
Work Environment: This position is in the Geologic Resources Division, who is collaborating with the “Views of the National Parks” Project; both groups are part of the Natural Resource Program Center, a Washington office based in Lakewood, Colorado. GRD has approximately 25 permanent federal staff and is assisted by about 10 interns and research associates. The participant will be expected to work 40 hours/week. Workspace, computer, and necessary software and other equipment will be provided.
