Physical/Natural
Environment:
The Klamath National Forest is located in Northernmost California on the Oregon Border. It lies within three physiographic provinces, the Klamath Mountains, the Cascades, and the Modoc Plateau. Interstate 5 separates the Klamath Forest into two parts, with the Klamath Mountains to the west, and the Cascades and Modoc Plateau to the east. There are marble caves in the Klamath Mountains, and lava tube caves in the Cascades. The Klamath River traverses the center of the Forest. Higher elevation lands have been glaciated, and as a result glacial lakes and spectacular cirques comprise an important part of the landscape. The Forest includes parts of five Wilderness Areas, the Marble Mountain, Russian, Trinity Alps, Siskiyou, and Red Buttes Wilderness.
Work Environment: The participant will work out of the Klamath National Forest Supervisor’s Office in Yreka, California. Summers can range from relatively cool in June to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days in late July and early August. The participant will work with the Forest Geologist, and other Forest Service earth scientists. The participant will need a good pair of hiking boots and backpacking equipment suitable for summer camping. Work will involve roughly 60% field and 40% office assignments. As with most California National Forests, field work may involve encounters with black bears, rattlesnakes, yellow jacket wasps, and occasionally, mountain lions. Poison oak is common at lower elevations. Yreka is a town of about 7,000 people. Amenities include grocery stores, a movie theater, hospital, and other businesses including hardware stores, a bookstore, and several restaurants and bars. Expanded amenities are also available in the much larger communities of Ashland and Medford (in Oregon), less than an hour’s drive to the north, and Redding, California, an hour and a half to the south. There are regional airports in Medford and Redding. The Pacific coast (Crescent City) is about a four hour drive to the west.
