Public Land Name: Geologic Resources Division, National Park Service
Position Title: Oil & Gas Site Monitor (Guest Scientist)
Position ID Number: 121
Location: Lakewood, CO
Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will work with the Geologic Resources Division of the National Park Service. The participant’s duties will entail mostly field work to assist three park units with monitoring and compliance of non-federal oil and gas operations. Travel to three parks will be required, but expenses will be paid. The field portion will be spent visiting sites to develop comprehensive documentation of existing conditions and evaluating the operation sites for compliance with their plan of operations and requirements under the National Park Service’s non-federal oil and gas regulations. Working closely with park resource managers and Division specialists, the participant will prepare GPS-based photo documentation of site conditions, draft compliance letters for the park Superintendent’s signature, and prepare a close-out report. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Qualifications: Applicants must be pursuing a degree in the geosciences (geology, hydrology, soils, biology, engineering) and/or the environmental/natural resource field. Applicants with interests or experience in soils science, environmental science, or oil and gas technology will likely find the work more interesting. Graduates or faculty candidates are also welcome to apply. Previous field research and writing experience for the layman is desirable. The participant should be able to work well independently, both in the office and in the field with little supervision, have basic map reading and GPS orientation skills, and must be comfortable hiking along overgrown roads and trails in a forested environment. Basic computer skills are required. Knowledge of desktop publication software is a plus, but is not required. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Position Dates: May - September; 12 weeks, dates flexible
Payment: $3000 (3 mo); a $600/mo housing allowance will be provided for participants that are from outside the Denver commuting area
Housing Available: The participant will need to provide his/her own housing within the commuting area of the Lakewood, CO office of the Geologic Resources Division. If necessary, a housing allowance of $600/mo will be provided in addition to the $3,000 stipend. Numerous apartments and houses are available in the vicinity of the Geologic Resources Division office and there is the possibility of sharing housing with other staff employed by the Division.
Physical/Natural
Environment:
The office portion of this position is based in an urban setting in the Geologic Resources Division (GRD). GRD serves as the source for multidisciplinary expertise and guidance to parks and the NPS Directorate in support of their efforts to protect, restore, and understand the National Park System's geologic resources, and to protect resources from the adverse effects of mineral and energy development in and adjacent to parks. This position will require travel to three national parks. Most parks are located in rural areas. Cuyahoga Valley NP is located in a more urban setting. As in any outdoor setting there are inherent hazards – such as unstable fallen logs, poisonous snakes (copperheads and rattlesnakes), and insects including ticks – that people need to be aware of and take precautions against.
Work Environment: This position is in the Geologic Resources Division - Natural Resource Program Center, a Washington office based in Lakewood, located in the Denver metro area. GRD has approximately 25 permanent federal staff and is assisted by about 10 interns and research associates. Fieldwork will be conducted in three national park units scattered throughout the intermountain, midwest, and eastern areas of the U.S. The participant will be expected to work 40 hours/week. Workspace, computer, and necessary software and other equipment will be provided.
