The selected individual will conduct comprehensive geology and paleontological literature searches, including searches for geologic maps, on each network park using various NPS, USGS and internet databases, such as GeoRef, established by the American Geological Institute. The selected individual will be expected to prepare properly formatted and alphabetized bibliographic listings on all references obtained for each park. The selected individual will then synthesize the obtained information and prepare a draft summary of the scope and significance of fossils documented or likely to occur in each park. Published I&M network paleontological resource summary reports will be provided to serve as templates. During the twelve week internship it is anticipated that the selected individual may be able to complete these tasks on each of the North Coast and Cascades Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Network parks. The draft summary reports and supporting bibliographic information will be utilized by project staff to edit and publish the final report. All duties associated with this position will take place in an office environment, and no field work is anticipated. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program. | | Qualifications: | Applicant must have completed their junior year in college and be majoring in the geosciences or earth sciences. Graduates or faculty candidates are also welcome to apply. Coursework in paleontology is desirable, but not required. Previous writing experience for the layperson is also desirable. The participant should be able to work well independently with little supervision, have experience in conducing on-line scientific literature searches, and an ability to summarize scientific geologic information in a report format. Basic computer skills are required. Knowledge of desktop publication software is a plus, but is not required. | | Position Dates: | May – Aug timeframe; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible | | Payment: | $4500 (3 mo); plus $600/mo housing allowance will be provided for participants that are from outside the Denver commuting area | | Housing Available: | The participant will be responsible for finding housing in the Denver/Lakewood, Colorado area. Numerous apartments / houses are available in the vicinity of the office and there is the possibility of sharing housing with other interns in the office. | Physical/Natural Environment: | The position is based in an office setting in the Geologic Resources Division (GRD). GRD serves as the source for multidisciplinary expertise and guidance to parks and the NPS Directorate in support of their efforts to protect, restore, and understand the National Park System’s geologic resources, and to protect resources from the adverse effects of mineral and energy development in and adjacent to parks. GRD is responsible for NPS policy formulation and coordination, planning, and oversight of science-based geologic resource management programs of broad Service-wide importance. The Division is involved in a wide range of geologic science and minerals management activities, coordinating Service-wide functions and providing parks with geoscience and regulatory expertise related to cave and karst systems, coastal and surficial geologic processes, disturbed land restoration, fossil resource management, geologic hazards, soil resource management, environmental effects of mineral extraction, mineral extraction technology and engineering, and associated NPS policy and legal authorities to enhance resource management decisions. | | Work Environment: | This position is in the Geologic Resources Division - Natural Resource Program Center, a Washington office based in Lakewood, Colorado. GRD has approximately 25 permanent federal staff and is assisted by about 10 interns and research associates. The participant will be expected to work 40 hours/week.
