| Public Land Name: | Gila National Forest | | Position Title: | Physical Scientist | | Position ID Number: | 149 | | Location: | Reserve, NM | | Position Description: | The GeoCorps participant's duties will involve mapping and describing Ecological Types. This process, called Terrestrial Ecosystem Survey, involves collecting data through an integrated mapping process. Data on soils, vegetation, geology and geomorphology are collected simultaneously along a pre-established climatic gradient at the same points on the ground during the mapping process. The participant will assist with the field verifications of polygons and descriptions of ecological types. Work entails driving and hiking to representative locations to describe and map ecosystem types. Duties include assisting in digging soil pits and collecting and recording ecological site data (plant identification, soil descriptions, plant and tree measurements, slope aspect, slope gradient, ground cover, landform classification and identifying bedrock types and formations). The participant will provide expertise in bedrock and formation identification as well as landform and geomorphic process classification. The work week will often consist of four ten-hour days. Camping may be required during the work week. A completed Government security background check application will be required prior to starting this position. | | Qualifications: | The applicant should have or be pursuing a degree in the physical sciences and have a background or coursework in geology, geomorphology, soil science, and some plant sciences. Applicants must be in good physical health, and must have a desire to work in the outdoors in remote locations. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. | | Position Dates: | May - Sept; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible | | Payment: | $2750; housing provided | | Housing Available: | The Forest will provide housing at no cost to the participant in a small, 20 ft travel trailer located at a Forest Service Administrative Site, District Office or Campground. The location will be located in or near the towns of Reserve, Luna or Quemado, NM. There is a possibility of Forest Service crew quarters being available for housing located at a Forest District Office or Administrative site located in one of these communities. Crew may be quartered at the same site during the work week. Tents, backpacks, and camping equipment will be provided if necessary during the work week. | Physical/Natural Environment: | The geology of this region is volcanic in origin. The mountains are a result of complex volcanic and tectonic processes. Bedrock types include basalt and andesite overlying rhyolites, tuffs and sedimentary tuffaceous sandstones of the Datil formation. Gila Conglomerate (fanglomerate) occurs on alluvial fan remnants on the fringes of the mountains and as alluvial fill in Grabens. | | Work Environment: | Work will be outdoors in rough, steep mountainous terrain from Pinyon-Juniper (6,000 ft elevation) Woodlands to Mixed Conifer (8,000 ft) and possibly Spruce-Fir (10,000 ft +). There can be 30+ degree temperature shifts from daytime to nighttime temperatures. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and often result in significant temperature shifts. Work is with full time staff mostly outdoors. Camping may be required for stretches of up to eight days, including backpacking and horse packing. Government vehicles are used for day to day work. Local communities have very limited services. Small grocery stores are located in Reserve and Quemado, NM and nearby Alpine, Arizona. More services are provided in Sprinerville, Arizona which is approximately30 to 50 miles from the housing locations. A personal vehicle is strongly recommended.
