| Public Land Name: | Sierra National Forest | | Position Title: | Geologist | | Position ID Number: | 15 | | Location: | Clovis, CA | | Position Description: | The GeoCorps participant will assist in the assessment of groundwater conditions for the purpose of identifying locations to drill for potable water for campgrounds and administrative site facilities. Responsibilities will include reviewing geologic maps and mapping fractures and springs within the assessment areas. Field work will include collecting fracture data at rock outcrops, inventorying springs and ultimately locating recommended sites to drill for groundwater. This work could occur on the Sierra National Forest (NF), Stanislaus NF and Sequoia NF. The participant will contribute to the Lake Alkalinity Evaluation (LAKE) Monitoring Study. This will include collecting water samples in the John Muir Wilderness on the Sierra National Forest and Inyo National Forest, as part of a larger monitoring project that is assessing the potential effects of atmospheric pollution in Class I Wilderness lakes. This work will include backpacking or horse-packing trips into wilderness areas.
The participant will monitor caves in the Giant Sequoia National Monument and Kings Cavern Geologic Interest Area to determine conditions of speleothems and assess recreational use of the cave. The participant will assist in assessing watershed restoration sites for the Big Creek Watershed Restoration Project, Sierra National Forest. This work will include reviewing inventoried Watershed Improvement Needs (WIN) sites to determine options to restore the site, surveying the site, and determining estimated costs to restore the site. The participant will accompany and assist the Forest Geologist on on-going projects on the Sierra NF, Sequoia NF and Stanislaus NF. Work could include walk-in requests that require field work and/or geologic input for the requested project. Ongoing projects include a landslide stabilization project that could include constructing micro-piles to stabilize a landslide that is causing displacement of a major forest road. Another project is the Ferguson Rockslide, which will require evaluating monitor instruments and data to ensure that instruments are operating and proper data is being collected. This work may include collecting additional data on the rock slide to determine slope stability. | | Qualifications: | The applicant should have basic coursework in geology that includes mineralogy, petrology, and structural geology. Coursework in hydrogeology, geomorphology and engineering geology will make the applicant more competitive. The applicant should be able to work well on their own both in the office and in the field, and to interpret aerial photos; should have good map-reading and orientation skills, and be equally comfortable hiking cross country in a rugged mountain environment one day and spending the next at a computer. The applicant should have a valid driver’s license. Applicants will be expected to provide a DMV report on their driving record in order to drive a Forest Service vehicle. | | Position Dates: | May - Aug; 11 weeks; start/end dates flexible | | Payment: | $2750; plus $2000 housing allowance | | Housing Available: | Participant will be expected to find their own housing and will be given a housing allowance of $2,000 to cover the 11 week position in addition to the $2,750 stipend. The supervisor will provide information on apartments in the area or possible roommate opportunities. | Physical/Natural Environment: | The Sierra National Forest is located in Central California between Yosemite National Park and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. The Sierra National Forest has predominantly granitic bedrock with metamorphic roof pendants, and some volcanic rocks. The higher elevations have been glaciated leaving as evidence spectacular glacial moraines, cirque basins, and glaciated valleys. The Forest has five Wilderness Areas that include the Monarch Wilderness, Dinkey Lakes Wilderness, John Muir Wilderness, Ansel Adams Wilderness, and the Kaiser Wilderness. | | Work Environment: | The participant will work out of the Sierra National Forest Supervisor’s Office located in Clovis, CA. Clovis is a full service community located adjacent to Fresno, CA and about 3 hours from the Pacific Ocean. Typical weather in the summer has highs in the low to high 90’s. Work will consist of moderate to arduous fieldwork and could include a backpacking wilderness trip to collect water samples at high elevation lakes. The participant will need to be able to carry a 40 lb. back pack, and will need a good pair of hiking boots. Other backcountry equipment will be provided. Working on Saturdays is sometimes required. As with any scientific field, office work will be required to prepare for field work and to document all work. The supervisor will try to get the participant into the field at least 50% of the time. A car is not necessary but is highly encouraged to explore some of our great National Parks and the coastal area. Be prepared to go into the field on your first day.
