Position Title: Hydrologist

Position Description: The principal duties of the GeoCorps participant will be to assist the District Hydrologist to complete the Big Creek Watershed Restoration Project and conduct Best Management Practices Monitoring. The Big Creek Watershed Restoration Project Work will include assessing inventoried Watershed Improvement Needs (WIN) sites to determine causes and restoration treatments, surveying WIN sites, and determining estimates of costs for treatments. Work will entail assessing the WIN sites at a site and landscape scale and considering overall conditions of the watersheds in prioritizing watershed restoration sites. Best Management Practice Monitoring entails following established protocols to review project activity areas to determine if Best Management Practices were used in the implementation of the project, and whether they were effective at protecting water quality. The District Hydrologist may include the participant in other project activities as they develop. An effort will be made to acquaint the participant with all possible aspects of the role of the hydrologist in the Forest Service. Be prepared to go into the field on your first day. This position will involve mostly outdoor work and will require hiking on steep slopes, and carrying a day pack or equipment that weighs 10-20 pounds, sometimes under hot, dry summer weather conditions. Some time will also be spent in the office working on a computer to complete analysis and documentation of work. A completed Government security background check application will be required prior to starting this position.
Qualifications: Applicant should have completed at least three years toward a degree in the geosciences. The applicant will be evaluated on the breadth of hydrology or watershed science coursework they have completed and any other relevant experience they have. Completion of any or all of the following courses is desirable: Stream Hydrology, Fluvial Geomorphology, Watershed Restoration, Watershed Ecology, and Introduction to Soil Science. In addition, knowledge of the principles of cumulative watershed effects and watershed scale processes should be demonstrated by the applicant. The applicant should be able to work well on their own, both in the office and in the field, have good map reading and orientation skills, and computer skills. GIS skills are desirable, but not required. The applicant must have a valid driver’s license and will be expected to provide a DMV report on their driving record in order to drive Forest Service vehicles.
Position Dates: May - August; 11 weeks; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $2750; plus $2000 housing allowance
Housing Available: The GeoCorps participant will be expected to find their own housing and will be given a housing allowance of $2,000 to cover the 11 week position in addition to the $2,750 stipend. The supervisor may be able to provide information on apartments in the area or possible roommate opportunities. Personal transportation is strongly recommended.

Environment:
The Sierra National Forest is located in Central California between Yosemite National Park and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. The Sierra National Forest has three major rivers including the Kings River, San Joaquin River and the Merced River. The higher elevations have been glaciated leaving as evidence spectacular glacial moraines, cirque basins, and glaciated valleys. The Forest has five Wilderness Areas that include the Monarch Wilderness, Dinkey Lakes Wilderness, John Muir Wilderness, Ansel Adams Wilderness, and the Kaiser Wilderness.
Work Environment: The participant will work out of the High Sierra Ranger District located in Prather, CA. Prather is a small town located 25 miles northeast of Clovis and Fresno, CA and about 3 hours from the Pacific Ocean. Typical weather in the summer has highs in the 90’s. Work will consist of moderate fieldwork. Participant will need a good pair of hiking boots. As with any scientific field, office work will be required to prepare for field work and to document all work. A personal vehicle is strongly recommended for getting around the rural Prather area, and for exploring some of our great National Parks and the coastal area located within a few hours' drive.
