| Public Land Name: | Hiawatha National Forest | | Position Title: | Karst Technician / Hydrogeologist | | Position ID Number: | 181 | | Location: | St. Ignace, MI | | Position Description: | The GeoCorps participant’s primary duties will be to assist the Forest in maintaining and updating its inventory of karst features of the Niagara Escarpment. Training on the use of the Forest's karst inventory protocols will be provided. The inventory will focus on previously unknown karst features and verify known karst features, and will include collecting GPS locations and geologic/hydrologic data relating to the karst features. Some onsite training may also be required to identify Threatened and Endangered Plant and Animal species that are known to thrive on the Niagara Escarpment. The individual will work with and be mentored by the Forest Geologist, as well as the District Hydrologist, Botanist and Biologist. The participant will also be required to work independently. Training in safe work practices and the use of Government equipment (vehicles, computers, etc.) will be provided. A completed Government security background check application will be required prior to starting this position. | | Qualifications: | Applicant must have completed at least two years toward a degree in the geosciences. Geology graduate students, graduates, and professionals are also welcome to apply. Coursework related to karst topography, geologic history, geomorphology, or hydrogeology is highly desirable. The applicant should be able to work independently with little supervision, both in the office and in the field. Basic topographic and geologic map reading and GPS orientation skills are required. The successful applicant must be comfortable hiking cross-country in a forested environment. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. | | Position Dates: | May – August; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible | | Payment: | $2750; plus $1500 housing allowance | | Housing Available: | The St. Ignace has a cabin that houses seasonal workers and volunteers. It is due for some repairs that are planned for this year. However, these repairs will not allow occupants. So it may potentially be unavailable if the repairs cannot take place by the time the student arrives. We will have advanced notice for this. | Physical/Natural Environment: | The Hiawatha National Forest has one of the longest shorelines of any other National Forest. It borders three Great Lakes and is home to numerous historical light houses. The local area is unique because of it's karst features. The project area is part of the Niagara Escarpment feature which runs and curves from Niagara Falls to Southern Wisconsin passing through the St. Ignace Ranger District. The area has numerous sinkholes, small cave openings, boulder fields, fissures to name a few. These limestone features are host to a few Threatened & Endangered plant and animal species. It also is home to quality vegetation management resources. | | Work Environment: | Most of the work will take place outdoors. Hiking through some thick forests and rugged uneven terrain. The temperatures in the field season range from 50 degrees F in May to 80 degrees F in August. A majority of the work will entail carrying a GPS while collecting Geologic information.
