| Public Land Name: | Devils Tower National Monument | | Position Title: | Education Specialist / Geologist | | Position ID Number: | 185 | | Location: | Devils Tower, WY | | Position Description: | Devils Tower wishes to expand and update its "Views of the National Parks" website with updated geologic, cultural, and climbing history information; develop an interpretive program centered on the unique geology, climbing history, and natural resources of the Tower; assist in the development of park wayside exhibits, and assist climbing rangers in the monitoring of Prairie Falcon closure areas, and removal of abandoned and outdated gear located on the Tower. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program. | | Qualifications: | Applicants must have an undergraduate degree or higher in geology. The applicant must have knowledge of, or a willingness to understand and communicate orally and/or in electronic format, the geology of the monument to target audiences. The applicant must communicate well both orally and in writing, work well with others, and possess basic climbing skills. The applicant must be able to develop a project schedule, set priorities throughout the development of the process, and work independently both in the field and in the office. Applicant should possess computer skills in the standard Microsoft Office programs; web design experience is preferred. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. | | Position Dates: | May - Sept; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible | | Payment: | $2750; housing provided | | Housing Available: | A furnished apartment will be provided at no cost to the participant in Devils Tower, Wyoming, which includes sheets, pots/pans, flatware, etc. The participant will need to bring all personal items; a personal vehicle is required. | Physical/Natural Environment: | Devils Tower National Monument is our nation’s first national monument. Located in northeast Wyoming, it was set aside to preserve the 867 foot column of igneous rock along with prehistoric/historic cultural resources and the plants and animal life of the area. Park size is 1,347 acres with an elevation of about 3,800 feet. The climate is typical of the Black Hills region. High temperatures can range from the mid 90s in the summer to the 50s in the spring and fall with extended periods of below zero temperatures possible in winter. | | Work Environment: | The monument will supply office space and a computer at their headquarters in Devils Tower, Wyoming as well as basic climbing gear. The three closest communities, Hulett (9 miles), Sundance (28 miles), and Moorcroft (30 miles) have basic services. The larger communities of Spearfish, SD and Gillette, WY are approximately 1 hour away with many services available.
