Public Land Name: BLM National Landscape Conservation System
Position Title: GIS / Natural Resource Specialist

Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will conduct geospatial data searches (employing databases such as NatureServe and Departmental and Bureau sources) in conjunction with Senior Staff Specialists in the National Landscape Conservations System. Program areas include National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness, Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and National Scenic and Historic Trails. The participant will support investigations into the significance of the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System to aid in protection and conservation of natural resources (i.e. water sources, soils, plant and animal species, etc). The participant will be required to produce maps using GIS and a final reports and briefings detailing findings. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
Qualifications: Applicants should have completed at least two years towards a degree in geography, environmental science, natural resources management, landscape architecture, geography, geology, or other related fields. An interest in the intersection of natural and cultural landscapes and in landscape management is desirable. Applicants should be able to work well independently, with little supervision, and be able to work collaboratively with others. Applicants will need knowledge and experience with cartography, ArcGIS and ArcMAP, GPS, and the MS Office Suite. Experience with mathematical algorithms such as GARP and BIOCLIM would be useful but is not required. This headquarters office position will require analytical, quantitative, and GIS skills and be able to work with others in a problem solving capacity. GIS experience is required.
Position Dates: May 20 - August 5; 12 weeks
Payment: $2750; plus $2000 housing allowance
Housing Available: Housing is expensive in this area, but Washington Office supervisors can assist with advice and suggestions about best housing options. A personal vehicle is not required as DC has good public transportation. Financial compensation for public transportation to and from the office will also be provided.

Environment:
This is a position in the Washington Office of the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS). The NLCS consists of more than 26 million acres that include National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness, Wild and Scenic Rivers, National Scenic and Historic Trails, and other congressionally designated public lands that are administered by the Bureau of Land Management. The NLCS mission is to conserve, protect, and restore these nationally significant landscapes of exceptional cultural, ecological, and scientific values for the benefit of current and future generations.
Work Environment: The participant will work out of the Office of the National Landscape Conservation System in the Washington DC headquarters assisting the program staffs for National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness, Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers and National Scenic and Historic Trails as well as the National Science Coordinator and the NLCS Partnership Coordinator. The participant will be expected to work 40 hours/week. Workspace, computer, and GIS software will be provided.
