Position Title: Soil Scientist

Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will be involved with field verification of fens on the Forest as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Field verification will be based on existing photo interpretation of potential fen locations of the forest, and will be completed using a protocol established by the Forest, and will include verifying the presence or absence of histosols. The standard protocol will be used at all locations to ensure consistent verification techniques are used. Forest personnel will select the field sites to be visited. Field verification will also require use of topographic maps, aerial photos, a handheld GPS, map and compass, digital camera, and soil sampling tools to be provided by the Forest Service. The participant will work alone, or with a field partner, in remote, mountainous terrain. Access to field sites will include travel on unimproved roads, and by cross country travel on foot. Work will be performed with guidance from Forest team of specialists including botanists, hydrologists, geologists and wetlands specialists. A completed Government security background check application will be required prior to starting this position.
Qualifications: Professional experience in soil science, or current involvement in graduate program in soil science. Applicant must have the ability to work independently, and at times alone, in a backcountry setting, and/or remote and rugged terrain at elevations between 9,000 and 13,000 feet. Position requires ability to navigate and travel using map and compass and handheld GPS to find field sites. Experience in driving a 4x4 vehicle on unimproved roads is needed, along with the physical ability to travel cross country on foot at high elevation (9,000 to 13,000 feet). The applicant must be able to use technology to transfer field data from GPS and camera to computers.
Position Dates: June – early September; 12 weeks; dates flexible
Payment: $2,750; housing provided
Housing Available: Housing will be provided at no cost to the participant at various Ranger Districts and backcountry work stations on the Forest. It is expected that the GeoCorps participant will stay at various locations during the course of the work period in order to be close to specific work sites.
Physical/Natural 
Environment:
The GMUG National Forests cover about 3 million acres in western Colorado. The Forest lies in portions of the Colorado Plateau and Southern Rockies physiographic provinces, and includes notable features such as the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre Plateau, and the West Elk, La Garita, Sawatch and Northern San Juan mountains. The Forest ecosystem encompasses mountain shrub to alpine tundra.
Work Environment: The work will be primarily performed in outdoors in a backcountry setting, often in remote and mountainous terrain where changeable weather conditions occur. Travel to field sites will include driving on unimproved roads, and traveling on foot on established trails or cross country. Some work will be performed in an office setting and will involve use of computers for data downloads and word processing.
