The participant will compile and digitally capture paper-based maps and data from past surveys for watershed improvements, stream inventories (SCI) and timber harvest histories using ArcMap. Old GPS files may need to be converted into new geodatabases and GPS will be used to record the location of springs and other water developments associated with Forest water rights.
A completed Government security background check application will be required prior to starting this position. | | Qualifications: | The applicant should have completed at least two years toward a degree in geology or a related field, with course work in hydrology, geomorphology, and/or GIS. Applicants should be able to work well independently with little supervision, and with collaboratively with others, have good computer skills, analytical thinking skills, map reading and GPS orientation skills. The applicant should have knowledge and experience with cartography, ArcMAP, GPS, and the MS Office Suite. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. | | Position Dates: | May – August; 12 weeks; dates flexible | | Payment: | $2750; plus $2000 housing allowance | | Housing Available: | The participant will be responsible for securing his/her own housing. The 2.1-million acre forest encompasses five wilderness areas, hundreds of mountain lakes and 6,278 miles of streams and rivers. Redding, CA offers spectacular views of two remnant volcanoes: Mt Shasta to the north and Mt Lassen to the east. A portion of the Sacramento River snakes thru town offering scenic hiking and biking trails. Just north of town on Interstate 5 is Shasta Lake with 365 miles of shoreline made-up of many arms and inlets make it a paradise for explorers and boaters alike. The four major arms of the lake, Sacramento, McCloud, Squaw Creek and Pit offer spectacular scenery as well as unusual geologic and historic areas of interest. The huge Shasta-Trinity National Forest offers a wide range of recreational activities. Some of these include hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, camping, boating, fishing, sightseeing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. | | Work Environment: | The participant will work out of Forest Headquarters located in Redding, CA. Approximately 70% of the work will be office work some visiting other Forest offices in Hayfork, Weaverville and McCloud CA, with the remaining 30% in the field. Participants will be expected to drive long distances to remote portions of the Forest, have footwear suitable for hiking up and down small streams to springs that may be in steep terrain. Climatologists describe the climate in the Redding area as Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
