The GeoCorps participant will serve as a front-line park interpreter of the geologic history and resources of Grand Teton National Park and how they might be affected by global climate change by researching, developing and presenting a range of original interpretive programs including: guided hikes, interpretive talks and audio-visual programs (40%). Interpretive programs will focus on the geologic stories of the park and have an emphasis on the impacts of global climate change on the park’s glaciers, biological communities and natural processes. The participant will also be responsible for providing informal interpretation of park resources along park trails, overlooks, and other locations; plus staffing a park visitor center providing orientation and information on park resources to visitors (50%). Opportunities may be available to work on special projects using geologic expertise to develop web content, compile current geologic research for use in education & interpretation, and help train interpretive staff in topics related to geology and global climate change (10%). Training in interpretive skills, park resources, bear safety, and park operations are provided. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program. | | Qualifications: | Applicants must be upper-level undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in the geosciences or earth sciences. Graduates and professionals are also welcome to apply. Experience in public speaking, teaching or interpreting geology, or in environmental science is preferred. Oral communications skills and creativity required. An interest in normal fault mountain building, glacial geology and/or global climate change desirable. The applicant must be able to work independently in a busy national park and have knowledge of standard computer software including Microsoft PowerPoint. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. | | Position Dates: | May 18 - September 26; 19 weeks | | Payment: | $4354 (19 weeks); housing provided | | Housing Available: | Housing is provided at no cost to the participant in a small cabin or apartment with shared bedroom/ kitchen/bath facilities. Ability to live and work closely with others is essential. This is a remote park location and a personal vehicle is required due to distances to obtain groceries and other services and to fully enjoy what the park has to offer. | Physical/Natural Environment: | Grand Teton National Park is considered to be one of the crown jewels of the National Park System, a system which preserves and protects natural and cultural resources and values for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations. The park preserves and protects the magnificent scenery of the Teton Range, the central feature and focus of the park, and the valley known as Jackson Hole, the surrounding ecosystem, cultural and historic resources. Wildlife found in the park include moose, elk, bison, bears, wolves, coyotes, bald eagles, trumpeter swans and a variety of other animals. Vegetation ranges from sagebrush in the dry Jackson Hole valley, to forests of lodgepole pines and other conifers, to dwarf alpine plants above treeline. Work environments include trails, amphitheater, scenic overlooks, a small visitor center in a historic log building, and require long periods of walking/hiking and standing. Outdoor work is performed regardless of weather at high elevation (6,300 ft to over 8,000 ft). Recreational opportunities abound in the area for all manner of outdoor summer sports, wildlife viewing, canoeing, fishing, and miles of backcountry trails are here for your enjoyment.
