Position Title: GIS / Outdoor Recreation Technician

Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will have two primary responsibilities in portions of BLM's National Landscape Conservation System located within the Jarbidge FO: 1) Oregon National Historic Trail route mapping: The participant will work with BLM staff and partners to GPS the Oregon National Historic Trail within the Jarbidge Field Office (FO). This represents an exciting opportunity to provide the first comprehensive map of nearly 50 miles of the Oregon Trail within the Jarbidge FO. 2) Bruneau River-Sheep Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) and Jarbidge River WSA route mapping: The participant will work with BLM staff to GPS inventoried ways and unauthorized routes within these WSAs. These data will be used to help improve management of wilderness values within these WSAs. In addition to these two projects, the participant will have the opportunity to engage in other geoscience-related work based on the participant's interest and expertise. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
Qualifications: Applicants must have completed at least one year toward an undergraduate degree in the earth sciences, geography, or GIS. Applicants should have knowledge and/or experience using GPS and topographic maps for mapping and navigation; experience with GIS is preferred. Applicants must have good organizational skills; must be physically able to work in rugged terrain and in extreme temperatures; and must have the ability to work well independently and with little supervision. Primitive road or 4x4 driving experience is necessary.
Position Dates: June - September; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $2750; plus $1500 housing allowance
Housing Available: The participant will be responsible for securing his/her own housing with the $1,500 provided in addition to the $2,750 stipend. Local housing is available in rented apartments or in shared housing situations in Twin Falls; BLM staff can assist in locating housing.
Physical/Natural 
Environment:
The Jarbidge FO is located in south-central Idaho, roughly between the cities of Mountain Home and Twin Falls and extending from the Snake River south to the Nevada border. The Jarbidge FO is known for its unique geology of broad, gently rolling plateau lands with deeply incised rivers, which provide a variety of scenic values and habitats used by numerous fish, plant, and wildlife species. The Bruneau River-Sheep Creek and Jarbidge River WSAs are located in the western portion of the FO along the Bruneau and Jarbidge Rivers and their canyons. The Oregon National Historic Trail traverses the northern portion of the FO.
Work Environment: Most work will be out in the field. The participant can expect hot, desert work conditions through much of the summer. The participant may work alone or with other field staff as necessary. Twin Falls (pop. ~40,000) is located in south-central Idaho, located close to may recreational opportunities, such as rock climbing, hiking, camping, fishing, and boating. Twin Falls is 80 miles from Sun Valley and the Sawtooth Mountains, 120 miles from Boise, and 225 miles from Salt Lake City.
