Public Land Name: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve
Position Title: Cave Technician

Location: Arco, ID
Position Description: Cave Inventory and Monitoring primarily of unexplored portions of the Craters of the Moon Lava Field in the preserve area of the park. It will involve doing a grid search over very rough lava terrain and using GPS equipment. Preliminary mapping will be done for the lava tubes that are found. Applicant may also assist with the mapping project of the Tree Molds Trail area. Applicant will be working with either the NPS or BLM GIP and sometimes both of them during field work for safety reasons. Prior to starting this position, a government security clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Qualifications: Applicants should have or be pursuing an undergraduate degree in geology or related field; applicants with all levels of advanced degrees in geology are welcome. Applicants must be comfortable exploring and mapping caves, which may involve crawling in tight places. Applicants must be capable of hiking at least 5 miles in hot and arid conditions over rough terrain. Applicants must have a valid driver's license.
Position Dates: May 26- Aug 15; 12 weeks
Payment: $2750; housing provided
Housing Available: The park will provide housing at no cost to the participant, either in a furnished studio apartment shared with one other person or a furnished 3 bedroom, 2-bath dorm house shared with up to 6 people (must be flexible with co-ed dorm sharing if necessary). All cooking and dining equipment provided. Laundry facility available on site. Applicants need to bring their own towels and bedding. Personal transportation will be needed to buy groceries, etc.

Environment:
The Craters of the Moon Lava Field is a composite field made up of about 60 lava flows and 25 cones. It is the largest and most complex of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene basaltic lava fields on the eastern Snake River Plain, and is the largest dominantly Holocene basaltic lava field in the lower 48 states. It has nearly every type of feature associated with basaltic volcanism. The monument covers 1,100 square miles and has more than 400 miles of unpaved roads.
Work Environment: High desert (~6,000 ft.)-average summer temperature is between 50 and 90 degrees. Monument is 18 miles from Arco, a small town of 1,000. Idaho Falls and Twin Falls are both about 90 miles away, but have all major shopping. Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks are less than 4 hours away. Sun Valley is 65 miles away.
