Position Description: The duties of the GeoCorps participant will include: 1) conducting soil surveys to characterize soil in several project areas 2) conducting trail condition surveys including determining soil cover and assessing impacts of cross-country motorized vehicle use on soil erosion and compaction in select areas 3) conducting inventories of existing ATV routes. Responsibilities may also include conducting surveys to monitor movement of sediment into streams and conducting Watershed Improvement Needs (WIN) inventories in the project areas. Most of the work will be field-oriented and conducted independently. The principal duty of the GeoCorps participant will be to develop and carry out various soil sampling and monitoring activities during the summer field season. The participant will coordinate with the BLM outdoor recreation specialist, geologist, hydrologist and other specialist. The participant’s work will contribute to: making management decisions regarding location of transportation corridors and to developing Best Management Practices (BMPs) for OHV trail construction. Project-related documents will be recorded in digital form using Microsoft WORD and EXCEL, and ESRI GIS mapping software. Research implementation projects are essential for USGS and BLM’s communication with the public regarding our understanding of soils and impacts to these soils from both natural and man-made causes. Be prepared to go into the field during your first week. This position will involve mostly outdoor work and requires hiking on steep slopes, and carrying a pack or equipment that weighs 10-20 pounds. Use of OHV on varied terrain is also required. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
Qualifications: Applicants should have or be working toward a degree in geology or a geoscience-related field with coursework in soils, field methods and mapping. Applicants should have knowledge and/or experience using topographic maps and GPS for navigation. Applicants must have good organizational skills, must be physically able to work in rugged terrain, extreme temperatures, and work well independently. Off-road driving 4x4 experience is recommended and applicant should be comfortable with ATV use on unimproved routes. The applicant should be able to work with little supervision, both in the office and in the field. Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel Spreadsheets, and GIS are required. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
Position Dates: Jun - Sept; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $2,750; housing provided; a $800 travel allowance will be provided if needed
Housing Available: Housing will be available in the Alaska Fire Service Barracks; this will include a private room, no cooking facilities (mess hall available for fee during summer months), twin sized bed, shared bath, and laundry facilities.
Physical/Natural 
Environment:
The Eastern Interior Field Office includes 8 million acres of public lands in east-central Alaska. Work will be conducted in the White Mountains National Recreation Area, the Steese National Conservation Area and the Upper Black River area. Three National Wild and Scenic Rivers: Birch Creek, Beaver Creek and the Fortymile River are the principle recreational attractions. The area is known for spectacular vistas, wildflower displays, unusual landforms, and arctic wildlife viewing.
Work Environment: Most work will be out in the field. Participant can expect a variety of work conditions through much of the summer including rapidly changing weather, wet terrain, and biting insects. Participant may work alone or with other field staff as necessary. Fairbanks, Alaska is located close to many recreational opportunities, such as canoeing, fishing, hiking, and camping. Fairbanks is 121 miles north of Denali National Park and Preserve and 356 miles from Anchorage, Alaska.
