| Public Land Name: | Coronado National Forest | | Position Title: | Physical Scientist | | Position ID Number: | 204 | | Location: | Tucson, AZ | | Position Description: | The GeoCorps participant's duties will include mapping and describing Ecological Types, collecting data through an integrated approach. Data on soils, vegetation, geology and geomorphology will be collected simultaneously at tenth acre plots along a pre-established climatic gradient. The participant will generate maps composed of polygons through various ArcGIS layers using e-cognition, which will then be edited by full-time staff skilled in image interpretation. Ecological components within polygons will then be field verified and described. The participant will assist with the field verifications of polygons and descriptions of ecological types. Work will entail driving and hiking to representative locations to describe and map ecosystem types. Most of the time the mappers drive to an area to be mapped and traverse the landscape on foot collecting data in representative polygons. Duties will include assisting in digging soil pits and collecting and recording ecological site data (plant identification, soil descriptions, plant and tree measurements, slope aspect, slope gradient, ground cover, landform classification and identifying geomorphic processes, bedrock types and formations). The work week will often consist of five ten-hour work days. A completed Government security background check application will be required prior to starting this position. | | Qualifications: | The applicant should have at least an undergraduate degree in the geosciences and have a background or coursework in geology, geomorphology, geography, soil science, and plant sciences. Applicants must be in excellent physical health, and must have a strong desire to work in remote outdoor locations. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle. | | Position Dates: | May - Sept; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible | | Payment: | $2750; plus $1500 housing allowance | | Housing Available: | The GeoCorps participant will be expected to find their own housing and will be given a housing allowance of $1,500 to cover the 11 week position in addition to the $2,750 stipend. During the time spent in the field, crews stay in motels in nearby towns at Forest Service expense. No other housing is provided. | Physical/Natural Environment: | The geology of this region is primarily volcanic in origin with some sedimentary materials. Hills and mountains are a result of complex volcanic and tectonic processes. Fan remnants, alluvial fans are a result of fluvial processes which are located on the fringes of hill and mountains. Bedrock types include basalt, andesites, rhyolites, tuffs and sedimentary conglomerates. Alluvium is derived from mixed sources. | | Work Environment: | Field work will be outdoors in steep, rough, rugged mountainous terrain and low lying level to nearly level valleys and plains. Life zones range from low elevation semi-desert grasslands to higher elevation pinyon-juniper woodlands. There can be a wide range in temperature shifts from daytime to nighttime temperatures. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and often result in significant temperature shifts. Outdoor work is mostly done with full time staff. When the field, crews stay in motels at Forest Service expense. Government vehicles are used for day-to-day work.
