GeoCorps Positions

Public Land Name: Inyo National Forest
Position Title: Geologist
Position ID Number: 229
Location: Bishop, CA
Position Description: The Inyo National Forest is looking for an undergraduate or graduate student in geology to assist with the management of our approximately 1,000 abandoned mines. These sites pose a significant public safety hazard to recreation users, and the Forest Service has an ongoing program to mitigate the safety hazards at these sites. The GeoCorps participant will spend the summer assisting Forest Service staff addressing the abandoned mine hazards through a combination of inventory and review of paper files, development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) hazard sign monitoring database, inputting collected data into a GIS database, conducting site inspections, and collecting GPS data at abandoned mine sites across the Forest. The position will require approximately 70% office work and 30% field work. The field component will involve the inventory and placement of hazard mine warning signs. There will also be the opportunity to assist with abandoned mine land closures and bat monitoring. The participant will also work closely with our partners who also have roles in abandoned mine land management: the Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Fish and Game, and the California Office of Mine Reclamation. The Inyo National Forest uses ESRI’s ArcGIS software (v 9.2) and a variety of different Trimble GPS units with TerraSync and Pathfinder Office software. A completed Government security background check application will be required prior to starting this position.
Qualifications: Applicants must be working toward, or already have, an undergraduate degree in geology. Completion of at least one field geology course is required. The applicant should be able to work independently, have demonstrated proficiency in GPS technology through either course work or work experience, excellent computer skills, and a desire to interact with the public. Optional course work in Geographic Information Systems would make the applicant more competitive. Please supply references that have first hand knowledge of the applicant’s computer, GPS, or GIS experience. The applicant should also be able to hike several miles over sometimes steep and rough terrain with their field gear. The applicant must have a valid driver license.
Position Dates: June - September; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $2750; housing provided
Housing Available: The Forest Service will provide housing in dormitory quarters located in Bishop, CA. The participant will share a room with one other person of the same gender and have the use of shared recreation, living and cooking areas. We typically have a diverse group of residents who work in our fire, recreation, and resource programs. This facility is located within walking distance of all local amenities and is one mile away from the Forest Service Office. It is recommended that the participant bring a personal vehicle so they can explore the many different recreation opportunities that are available in this region. There is room to park a personal vehicle as well as a bicycle. Pictures of on-site housing are available on request.

Environment:

Bishop, California is a full service community of approximately 4,000 people with abundant recreation opportunities in fishing, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and climbing (http://www.bishopvisitor.com). Mammoth Lakes, CA is nearby and is a full service community of approximately 7,000 year round residents. The closest airport is located 200 miles to the north in Reno, NV. Work Environment: The participant will work in the Inyo National Forest Supervisor Office. The project will include approximately 30% field time and 70% office time and will require working largely independently. Safety training will be provided for working near abandoned mines. The Forest Service will provide a vehicle for field work and all field equipment. Field work will require driving approximately 10 - 100 miles per day to inspect abandoned mine sites driving on highway and four-wheel drive roads. Placement of abandoned mine signs requires the placement of a metal t-post using a 20 pound fence post-pounder. The Forest Service has a strict safety policy concerning underground mine entry and the selected applicant will not enter an underground mine at anytime. The work schedule is flexible and the Forest Service will accommodate any applicant who is also pursuing the completion of thesis or senior project in this geographic area.
