GeoCorps Positions

Public Land Name: Coronado National Memorial
Position Title: Speleologist
Position ID Number: 244
Location: Hereford, AZ
Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will be responsible for assisting park staff in gaining information on the park’s eight caves, and in the completion of a cave management plan. A scoping plan was developed in 2006 to aid Coronado National Memorial in identifying gaps in information on the caves and recommend research actions necessary to successfully complete a cave management plan. Coronado Cave is the only cave on the Memorial that is currently open to the public. Despite previous vandalism, the cave does retain interesting features such as scallops, rimstone dams, stalactites, stalagmites and historic graffiti. The most important features of Coronado Cave, however, are that it remains in an undeveloped, wild condition and that it is relatively easy to access and explore. Of the other seven features only two are currently classified as caves; both of which are small and extend less than 100 meters. The remaining "caves" on the Memorial are unexplored and currently classified as karst features. Five of the seven known caves and karst features have been located using a GPS and basic information on the entrance to each cave or karst feature has been documented as part of the cave management scoping process. Although some information exists on the location of the remaining two caves it has not proven accurate enough to find them to date. The participant will undertake the following actions to address management issues and concerns and ultimately produce a cave management plan for the park: 1) cave classification; 2) cave survey and mapping; 3) cave inventory; 4) natural resource condition assessment. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Qualifications: Applicants must have completed at least three years toward an undergraduate degree in geology or a related natural resource field. Applicants must have an interest in and ability to work in caves and in a rural location; must be physically able to work in rugged terrain, extreme temperatures, and work alone; an ability to work well independently and with little supervision; good organizational skills; knowledge of and ability to use a GPS unit and GIS experience; knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel Spreadsheet. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Position Dates: May – September; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $2750; housing provided
Housing Available: The park will provide housing at no cost to the participant. Housing will be in 3-bedroom, historic, Mission 66 style, ranch house with living room, kitchen and bathroom which is located in the middle of the park development. The participant will likely share the house with several other seasonal employees. The housing is approximately a 5 minute walk to the park's offices. The participant will need to bring linens and.
Physical/Natural
Environment:
The memorial is located at the southern end of the Huachuca Mountains, one of the region's "sky island" mountain ranges. Topography in most parts of the memorial is steep, climbing from 1,400 m in the grassland plain to 2,350 m at Montezuma Peak. The geology of the area is complex, with high angle reverse vaults juxtaposing sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rock.
Work Environment: The memorial is located in southeastern Arizona approximately 30 km south of the city of Sierra Vista. The memorial is bounded by the U.S./Mexico border to the south. Prospective participants are advised that due to its location on the international border with Mexico, conditions for conducting work are unique. Illegal activity takes place throughout the memorial, in the form of drug smuggling and illegal immigration. Employees must take extra precautions to assure the security of their equipment, vehicles, and persons. Some areas at the memorial may be closed due to border-related safety concerns. A car is not required but is recommended due to the remoteness of the park.
