Position Description: The GeoCorps position will be based either at Paradise, the most popular visitor area located in the south central portion of the park at 5,400 feet in elevation, or at Sunrise in the eastern portion of the park at 6,400 feet in elevation. Both areas include subalpine meadows and sweeping vistas. The participant will prepare and present educational programs to park visitors describing the compelling geologic features and processes at work on Mount Rainier: volcanism, glaciology, stream aggradation, etc. Mount Rainier is an ideal place to interpret climate change, and all of our programs also contain a component on geological hazards, especially lahars. These interpretive programs include PowerPoint presentations in campgrounds, visitor center, or at the Paradise Inn as well as guided hikes and talks. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Qualifications: Applicants must be working toward, or already have, an undergraduate degree in the geosciences. Applicants must have the ability and desire to interact with the public and assist them in understanding complex geologic principles evident in the resources of Mount Rainier National Park; the desire to share knowledge of geology with a diverse visiting public to inspire understanding and appreciation; the ability to research, create, develop and present interpretive programs for the general public that communicate complex scientific information in relevant and understandable ways. Public speaking experience is desired. Applicant must be available to attend resource and interpretation training at the beginning of the employment period indicated. The ideal applicant will have a strong customer service ethic, a good sense of humor, and the ability to work as part of a team. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
Position Dates: June – September; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $2750; housing provided
Housing Available: Park will provide housing at no cost to the participant. Private or semi-private room with shared kitchen, bath, and laundry facilities. Housing may be located either within the park at Longmire, or nine miles outside the park at Tahoma Woods. Basic furnishings provided. A personal vehicle is recommended due to the distance to groceries and other services as well as for exploring the area on days off.Housing may be a shared two-bedroom apartment or 2-3 bedroom house. In some cases you share a bedroom with another intern. Both apartments and houses are furnished, but the participant will need to bring bedding, kitchen supplies, towels, and other household items.
Physical/Natural 
Environment:
Mount Rainier stands 14,410 feet and holds over one cubic mile of glacial ice and snow. A diversity of ecological life zones from inland temperate rainforests to alpine tundra exist on it's slopes. Over 200 miles of hiking trails circle the mountain and provide outstanding day hiking and backpacking opportunities. Subalpine meadows burst into color with summer wildflowers while the cool old growth forests offer a shady respite from summer's heat.
Work Environment: Time will be split between visitor center, trails, and doing programs. Participants will be part of a staff of 15 summer employees. Work is performed both indoors and outside in all types of weather from snow, wind & rain to sun and heat. Work involves standing for long periods of time, walking over rough and uneven terrain, and living in close quarters with co-workers. Emphasis is on verbal communication with diverse park visitors. Training in interpretive skills, orientation to park resources, CPR, and more provided. Visitor services include a museum, wilderness information center, inn, and restaurant. Tahoma Woods is 15 miles west, between the small communities of Ashford and Elbe, and the site of the park's administrative headquarters. Ashford and Elbe have basic services including restaurants, overnight cabins, general stores, gas, and limited cell phone coverage. More complete services, including grocery stores, doctors, and dentists, begin in Eatonville, 20 miles further west.
