Public Land Name: Grand Canyon National Park (North Rim)
Position Title: Educational Park Guide / Geologist

Location: North Rim, AZ
Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will provide three educational geology programs (walks and talks), coach the staff on geology; develop and present a geology program as an illustrated evening PowerPoint program; follow through with updating interpretive geology exhibits in the Visitor Center and various wayside exhibits as assigned. As part of this GeoCorps program, the participant will prepare and present two original geology PowerPoint programs on a rotating basis to the public during the third annual "North Rim Geologist in Park Lecture Series." Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Qualifications: Applicants must have at least an undergraduate degree in geology; a graduate degree is preferred. A basic understanding of hydrology is desired. Some experience in public speaking, interpretation or environmental education is preferred but not required. Knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software is required. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
Position Dates: May - Sept; 12 weeks; start/end dates flexible
Payment: $2750; housing provided
Housing Available: Housing will be provided by the park at no cost to the participant. Housing is furnished in a shared government trailer, cabin or apartment with own bedroom and shared kitchen, living and bath areas. Ability to live and work closely with others is essential. Bring cooking utensils, linens and personal items. While a small convenience store is located in the campground, grocery stores and other shops are a 3 hour drive from park housing. A personal vehicle is highly recommended. This is a remote location and, depending on your provider, cell phone reception may be poor or non-existent.

Environment:
The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is the world's greatest example of arid land erosion and one of the most spectacular exposure of stratified rocks. The vastness of its landscape has an average depth of 4,000 feet, width of 10 miles, and a length of 277 river miles – contains a seemingly infinite system of colorfully sculptured plateaus, mesas, buttes, cliffs, slopes, ridgelines, and side canyons.
Work Environment: The work location of North Rim lies at 8,000 ft and is very isolated. Limited amenities and services are found at the North Rim, the nearest small town with a bank is Kanab, UT (80 miles) and the nearest town with full services (St George, UT) is 160 miles away.
