| Public Land Name: | Rocky Mountain National Park | | Position Title: | Geology Education Specialist | | Position ID Number: | 60 | | Location: | Estes Park, CO | | Position Description: | The GeoCorps participant will perform as an Education Instructor for the Heart of the Rockies Education Program at Rocky Mountain National Park. The program is based upon Colorado Education Standards and is used by over 100 schools and 10,000 students per year. The program has a heavy emphasis on the park’s geologic and glacial history. The participant will prepare education field activities for a variety of grade levels, primarily grades 3 – 8. Most programs will be hands-on field studies. The participant will also integrate existing lessons from the Heart of the Rockies teacher guides in both classroom and field settings. These lessons include the use of an existing geology trunk of portable materials. Classroom presentations occur in schools along the Front Range, but particularly in Denver, Fort Collins, and Estes Park. In-school presentations generally last about an hour or less. Field studies usually last 3 -5 hours and may occur in difficult weather conditions. The participant will also instruct prepared activities of ecology, history and other content areas. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program. | | Qualifications: | The applicant must have, or be working toward an undergraduate degree in geology; a solid foundation of geological and earth science processes is vital. Applicants should have knowledge and experience in working with students or youth groups in settings such as parks, nature center, museums, camps, schools, etc. The applicant must be a willing partner in a dynamic teaching team with others who are articulate and enthusiastic in their presentation manner. Because situations change frequently while working with children, the GeoCorps participant needs to be flexible and adapt readily. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. | | Position Dates: | Mar 16 - May 29; 11 weeks | | Payment: | $2750; housing provided | | Housing Available: | The park will provide housing at no cost to the participant. Shared housing with one same-gender roommate will be provided in an apartment setting. The apartment has full kitchen facilities (except dishwasher), bathroom, and living room. Will need to supply own simple kitchen ware, bedding, towels, food. The apartments for employees are within a five minute walk to work. The apartment neighborhood is friendly and social. A personal vehicle is recommended for off-time transportation. The park provides transportation during work. Participant must provide cold weather clothing and footwear. | Physical/Natural Environment: | The park’s geology displays classic examples of periodic uplifting and erosion of mountains beginning in Proteozoic period 1.7 billion years ago, with other events during the Paleozoic Era approximately 3210 to 280 million years ago, and final uplifting with the Laramide Orogeny. These events interspersed with Precambrian igneous intrusions, sea invasions and retreats, and Oligocene volcanism. Also evident are remnants of Pre-Bull Lake, Bull Lake and Pinedale Glaciations. | | Work Environment: | Located about 65 miles northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park straddles the Continental Divide between 8,000 and 14,000 ft. elevation. Weather can change from summer-like to winter-like and back within hours. Work is often performed in cool or cold spring-time weather. The park is famous for its spectacular landscapes, abundant wildlife, and varied ecosystems. The town of Estes Park is a five minute drive from the park and offers many modern amenities.
