Position Description: The participant will serve as a Guest Scientist with the soil resources management program that actively seeks to understand and preserve the soil resources of parks, and to prevent, to the extent possible, the unnatural erosion of soils, and protect property and provide safety by working to ensure that developments take into account soil limitations, behavior, and hazards. The participant will assist with the identification of various soil risks, hazards, and vulnerabilities from existing Soil Resources Inventory and park documents, and develop applicable geospatial datasets, maps, reports, and fact sheets to provide information and education products regarding soil risks and hazards, as well as other soil resource management topics, that will be served up on NPS Soil Resources Management website. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Materials to be produced by participant: The participant will assist with the identification of various soil risks, hazards, and vulnerabilities from existing Soil Resources Inventory and park documents, and develop applicable geospatial datasets, maps, reports, and fact sheets to provide information and education products regarding soil risks and hazards, as well as other soil resource management topics, that will be served up on NPS Soil Resources Management website. The participant will be required to submit a final report and images of project activities for the GeoCorps-GIP program. The participant will prepare webpage and report materials for the soil hazards project and soil resources management program.
Qualifications: Applicants must be working toward, or have completed, a graduate degree in soil science. In addition, applicants must be proficient with ArcGIS and MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint) and possess good skills and ability to communicate verbally and in writing to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience with web and/or graphic design and the use of software such as InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or Dreamweaver (or similar software) is a plus. The applicant should be able to work independently in the office; be comfortable contacting a variety of professionals; and work well with others. Interest and experience in interpretation, education and/or and outreach is a plus. Master's degree and professionals are encouraged to apply. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
Position Dates: Beginning late summer or early fall; start/end dates are flexible.
Position Duration: 6 months
Stipend: $9,000 ($1,500/mo.)

Housing Allowance: $3,600 ($600/mo.)
Housing Details: $600/mo housing allowance will be provided. The participant will be responsible for finding housing in the Denver/Lakewood, Colorado area. Numerous apartments / houses are available in the vicinity of the office and there is the possibility of sharing housing with other interns in the office.

This position is in an office setting in the Geologic Resources Division. GRD has approximately 25 permanent federal staff and is assisted by about 10 interns and research associates. The participant will be expected to work 40 hours/week. Workspace, computer, and necessary software and other equipment will be provided if needed.
