Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will be involved in the ongoing development of the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN) geomorphological monitoring protocols and data collection. In 2008, the Network began developing a protocol to monitor coastal dune and beach topography in a number of parks. Methods are being tested and pilot data collected at Gateway National Recreation Area and Fire Island National Seashore. The participant will be trained in field data collection using the NCBN monitoring protocols, and will assist NCBN scientists to evaluate existing data, as well as process and import new data into ArcMAP, to produce maps/ shapefiles. The position will include both an office and field component. A primary goal of the NCBN coastal geomorphology program is to provide information to park managers and to improve the understanding of the dynamic nature of coastlines. These data will be used in management decisions and in describing the condition of marine and coastal areas. The GeoCorps participant will take part in developing and providing this information to park managers. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps Program in partnership with the National Park Serviceís Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Materials to be produced by participant: Maps, shapefiles, protocols, reports.
Qualifications: Applicant preferred to have an MS or be working towards an MS degree in geography, geology, environmental science, or other related field. Graduates or faculty candidates are also welcome to apply, as well as undergraduates or recent graduates with GPS and/or GIS experience. Previous field research using GPS is required. The participant should be able to work well independently, both in the office and in the field with little supervision. Applicant must have a valid driverís license. Experience in GPS, GIS (ArcMap) and/or remote sensing, will make an applicant more competitive.

Housing Details: Free, shared, dormitory-like housing is provided at the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Rooms are shared by 2 people.
Sandy Hook is at the north end of the 127 mile long New Jersey seashore. The Sandy Hook peninsula, like other barrier beaches, islands and sand spits along the New Jersey coastline, serves as a thin, fragile buffer between the mainland and the Atlantic Ocean.
Work Environment: The participant will work out of the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area and will work closely with geomorphologist and research associates from Rutgers University, working cooperatively with the NCBN to collect and analyze long-term monitoring data. Fieldwork may be done independently within the parkís beach/dune setting. May spend long periods of time collecting GPS data on foot. Participant may use a government vehicle for field work, but will need transportation for personal use and for getting to and from work.
