Position Description: Rock Creek Park is seeking a Geoscientist Interpreter Intern to fill a void within the Division of Interpretation. The intern will enhance the visitor experience by researching, preparing, and presenting six guided geology hikes; creating a site bulletin on park geology; and creating short geology videos for use on the park website and on social media pages. Additionally, the intern will provide an "in-service" training for park staff on park geology. The intern will complete other tasks as assigned. Full training on interpretation, the National Park Service, and Rock Creek Park will be provided. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Serviceís Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
Materials to be produced by participant: 1. "Geology of Rock Creek Park" site bulletin using National Park Service interpretive media standards. 2. Research, prepare, and present six guided geology hikes. 3. Produce four brief geology videos to be used for social media outreach purposes. 4. Present an "in-service" training to staff on park geology.
Qualifications: Intern must be enrolled in or have completed college. Knowledge of and interest in geology required. Intern needs to have the ability to work well independently. Intern must be flexible and have a good work ethic. Applicant must have a valid driverís license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
Position Dates: May/June to August/September, 2013, with flexible start/end dates.

Housing Details: Free housing is provided. Intern will have a private bedroom in a shared house. Hiking trail out the back door! Television, high speed internet, living room, kitchen, and eating/cooking utensils included. Park housing is approximately two miles away from work station. Commuting options include using bicycle, bus, or private vehicle. Metro stop to National Mall and downtown DC is one mile away.

Environment:
Rock Creek Park is a 1,750 acre urban nature park in the nation's capital. Thirty-two miles of hiking trails lead through tranquil forest and along meandering creeks. In addition to the Nature Center and Planetarium, Rock Creek Park includes historical sites such as Peirce Mill, an 1800s water-powered gristmill, and Old Stone House, the oldest building in Washington, DC. Recreational opportunities include road cycling, hiking, running, horseback riding, kayaking, picnicking, and nature study.
Work Environment: Intern will work both indoors and outdoors. Indoor setting will be shared office space. Intern must be able to hike at least four miles over uneven, hilly terrain.
