CONTROLLER

The Geological Society of America, located in Boulder, Colorado, USA, is seeking applications for the position of Controller. This position will be in charge of the Financial Services Department, will report directly to the Executive Director, and will coordinate with the Treasurer, the Finance Committee, the Investment Committee, and the Audit Committee. The Financial Services Department is also part of the Corporate Services Group.

This position, at the direction of the Executive Director, is responsible for the supervision of the financial services team and coordination of their activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, fixed assets, and the budget. Other activities will include monthly analysis of budget variances, accounting for investment activities, accounting for government grants that are awarded to the Society, and the coordination of the annual audit and tax return.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified candidates will be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with a college degree in accounting and at least five years experience as a Controller or in Public Accounting. A demonstrated proficiency in financial planning and financial data analysis combined with superior problem-solving skills, excellent managerial skills with at least 5 years experience managing others, the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, along with excellent people and administrative skills are required. Knowledge of GAAP, with particular emphasis in not-for-profit accounting, cost accounting for publications, and the management of a large chart of accounts is desired. Advanced experience with Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) is mandatory, and knowledge of Great Plains accounting software and ADP payroll software is a plus.
