GSA Today

Sizing

Science articles for GSA Today should be no more (and preferably less) than six printed pages, including title, authors, abstract, text, references, figures, and tables.

TEXT: 6,500 characters (letters and spaces between words) = approximately one printed (published) page. To this number, ADD 1400 characters (leeway needed for larger type for the title, authors, and addresses, boldface abstract, and space around figures and tables); note that long titles, long lists of authors, and long abstracts will increase this number.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS, REFERENCES CITED, AND FIGURE CAPTIONS are set in smaller type than is text, so for these, 12,000 characters = approximately one printed (published) page.

To the number derived from the character count must be added the amount of space needed for each figure and table. Determine this by deciding how small the figures can be and how much space they will occupy at those sizes on an 8½ × 11 inch page. Make sure the lettering is large enough to read at probable publication size; rule of thumb: the smallest letter or symbol, at publication size, should be at least 1.5 mm tall.

GSA Today "Groundwork" articles must be no longer than two print pages: ~1400 words with two small figures or ~1600 words with one figure. The philosophy behind this is twofold: (1) keeping an article short can increase the clarity and quality of the writing; and (2) a short article encourages readers to engage and seek more information.
