Supplementary Material
Authors can submit information that supplements and expands on their published article as Supplementary Material. (Newly acquired data presented only in graphs in the manuscript must be placed there.) This supplemental information should support the main scientific conclusions of the paper, but isn't a necessary part of the understanding of the ideas and conclusions of the published paper. Examples are lists of species, geophysical data, geochemical data, etc.
Supplemental Information files submitted to GSA should meet the following criteria.
- Central to the main scientific conclusions of the paper.
- Likely to be usable by other scientists working in the field.
- Described with sufficient precision that other scientists can understand the info.
- Can be put into one of the required digital formats, within size constraints.
The following file types will be accepted.
- TEXT files, with suffix .txt, which contain paragraphs of plain ASCII text. XML documents are also accepted.
- TABLE files, with suffix .txt, containing a single ASCII table of data in row and column format. GSA preference is for comma-delimited ASCII files.
- FIGURE files, with suffix .eps, .tif, .gif, .pdf, or .jpg
- Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)
- Tagged Image File Format (TIFF)
- Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
- Portable Document Format (PDF)
- Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) - use only for photographic images
- MULTIMEDIA files in .mpg, .avi, .gif, .fla, .mov, or .mp3
- Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or MPEG-4)
- Audio Video Interleave (AVI)
- Animated GIF (GIF)
- Macromedia Flash (FLA)
- Quicktime movie (MOV)
- MPEG Audio Layer 3 (MP3)
Supplemental Information for a GSA article must not exceed 50 MB total size (for all files combined), in any combination of the following.
- ASCII files: up to 15,000 characters with spaces
- Graphics files: 25 MB total
- Multimedia files: 50 MB total (recommended size ~15 MB per file)
Citing GSA Supplemental Information
Supplemental information will be referenced in the text of the manuscript with their file name, and a link to the online file. A footnote will be given in the printed version of the journal, for example:
Supplemental files L55555.sa1 and g55555.sf1 are available online at http://www.gsajournals.org/xx/xxx, or they can be located by their DOI number at www.doi.org.
