An important distinction among awards that concern the Division is the difference between Division awards and GSA awards. The Division Management Board and Panel administer the nomination, application, selection, and awarding of Division awards. They also administer these aspects of the Kirk Bryan Award, which is the GSA award officially associated with the Division (only one such named GSA award is allowed per division). Other Division awards are funded by accounts set up to fund specific awards within the Division. Except for the Kirk Bryan Award, the Division does not handle the nomination, application, selection, or awarding process for GSA awards. Although they are restricted to geomorphic research, the Cole Research Award and Fahnestock Award are GSA awards, not Division awards. Nevertheless, each year the GSA Committee on Research Grants asks the Division for evaluations of Cole Research Award
proposals. Nominations for awards are accepted throughout the year, but nomination packages received after the deadline (below) will not be considered until the following year.
Please note: Nomination packages (preferably as PDF attached to email) are to be submitted electronically. Paper submissions of nomination packages will be accepted by permission of the QG&G Division Officer who handles the award.
Student Awards:
The application form for the Mackin-Howard awards as well as student research grants is now online. Any research grant application that has "Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology" selected as the General Field of Research Project will be automatically eligible for consideration for these two awards (Howard award for MS students; Mackin award for PhD students) unless a potential applicant has previously received a GSA
Graduate Student Research Grant. If a student has not previously received a GSA Graduate Student Research Grant, then separate applications for these two awards need not be submitted. Any student who has already received a GSA student research grant for the same degree work may still apply for the Mackin or Howard awards. To apply, use the GSA research grant application and appraisal forms available online, but rather than
submitting them online to GSA, submit them as pdf files to the Division secretary and indicate which award the application is for. The secretary will forward these applications to the QG&G review committee.
If you are applying for one of the above QG&G Division student awards, please visit http://rock.geosociety.org/qgg/ for more instructions. THE 2008 APPLICATION PROCEDURES ARE AVAILABLE AT: http://www.geosociety.org/grants/index.htm
