Articles were written by the Associated Press, Reuters, Science News, and others. Broadcast coverage included the CBS Evening News and CNN. The story was also covered by the BBC.

Answer: Aegean Sea

The Aegean Sea, south of Greece, is spreading behind the Cretan Trench where the African plate is subducting. The Persian Gulf is a downwarp where the Arabian plate meets Eurasia, the Red Sea is a slow-spreading basin where Arabia has broken off from Africa, and the Mediterranean is a complex convergent zone between the European and African plates. It contains two back-arc basins, the Aegean and Tyrrhenian seas. Source: www.geology.about.com/
