New Research Fund
The Farouk El-Baz Student Award has been established through the generosity of the Qatar Foundation to encourage and promote desert research in the broadest sense.

Research by García-Ruiz et al. on natural gypsum megacryatals in Naica, Mexico's, Cave of Crystals ("the Sistine Chapel of crystals") (GEOLOGY, April 2007) received extensive worldwide coverage. It was the lead story on BBC News Online on 5 April, received coverage in SCIENCE, NATURE, and appeared on the National Geographic and Discovery Channel Web sites, among others.

Research by Vanacker et al. on use of revegetation to slow soil erosion in the Ecuadorian Andes (GEOLOGY, April 2007) was reported in NATURE and by SciDev.net, a Web site emphasizing science in third-world countries.
