You'll find several universities and high-tech businesses in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, and it's a central location for examining many geologic treasures, including the Woodbine Formation at Lake Grapevine; Mineral Wells, Texas, and the North Texas Hill Country; and Big Bend National Park to the south.

Portland, Maine's largest city, is located on a peninsula in Casco Bay, along the Atlantic Ocean. The Portland area offers a variety of natural attractions, including the Fore River Sanctuary and Jewell Falls, the Baxter Woods Reserve, and extended lowlands where salt- and freshwater marsh meet.

Rockford is so named because of its location at a rock outcrop popular for fording the Rock River, which runs through the city. Rockford is the home of juvenile T. rex, Jane, on display at the Burpee Museum of Natural History, and just to the northeast of town is Rock Cut State Park.

With mountains, beaches, orchards, and vineyards, the Okanagan Valley, which is the northernmost extension of the Sonora Desert, is beautiful country for a geoscience meeting. Kelowna, on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake, is an ideal location for study of the Canadian diamond industry, the Channeled Scablands, and the Burgess Shales.

About 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, Orem, Utah, is located on the eastern shore of Utah Lake in the foothills of Mount Timpanogos. Nearby are the Wasatch Mountains and Uinta National Forest, and to the south are several national parks and recreation areas, including Capitol Reef National Park.

A SAMPLING OF GSA IN THE NEWS

Findings by R.E. Milliken et al. (GEOLOGY, November 2008) from a NASA space probe provide new evidence of opal on Mars, suggesting that liquid water played a crucial role in shaping the Martian landscape. The discovery was reported by the BBC News and United Press International, and appeared on numerous Web sites, including Geology.com and Space.com.
