Special Paper 471
Ancient Earthquakes
Edited by M. Sintubin, I.S. Stewart, T.M. Niemi, and E. Altunel
This volume, which will be of interest to a broad community of scientists, historians, and archaeologists, convincingly illustrates the different ways the archaeological record can be used in earthquake studies of regions threatened by seismic hazards.

Focusing on Conflict Minerals
You've heard of blood diamonds, but have you heard of "coltan"? Researcher Katrina Shughrue of Juniata College and colleagues are using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to track the provenance of "coltan" (columbite-tantalite) — the major source of which is central Africa, including the embattled Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Currently, the U.S. has legislation in place that would require companies to report whether their products contain minerals from the DRC. LIBS can help determine a mineral's origin by tracing the "chemical fingerprint" of any material in "real time."
