Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will assist the Park Geologist and Regional Geomorphologist in examining increasing geologic hazards at Mount Rainier National Park. The emphasis for Fall 2015 will be: (1) Installing and maintaining a new stream gage on the park's Northwest corner, including routine computation of discharge for the development of a discharge rating curve; (2) Conducting discharge measurements and providing maintenance on several other park rivers and stream gages for discharge rating curves; (3) Using the USGS EvacuationAnalyst ArcGIS extension, map paths and trails at park visitor destinations to generate accurate evacuation route maps in the event of a major flood or geologic event; (4) Installation of Citizen Science photo posts around the park; and (5) Documentation of floods and flood surveying, debris flows investigation, and other geologic/geomorphic events as they occur. The participant may also be involved in other efforts to understand the causes and extent of river aggradation, including “forensic” geomorphology at the initiation sites of recent destructive debris flows, to identify triggering mechanisms (to help predict future debris flows); and assisting with glacier mapping of terminus positions and stagnant ice. Because of an excess of sediment, the park’s rivers are aggrading – that is, river beds are rising by as much as 6 feet a year. This means that for the same size storms, the flood potential is ever-increasing. Being older parks, many roads are located in valley bottoms, and subject to flooding and debris flow damage. For basic planning and safety, it is necessary for us to understand the rate of river bed rise, and attendant flood hazards. There is substantial evidence of increased debris flows associated with glacier melting and climate change.
