The New Mexico BLM Abandoned Mine program is tasked with identifying and mitigating hazardous abandoned mine features throughout the state of New Mexico. The first step is to identify how many and where they occur.
The participant serves on a team to identify and record abandoned mine features on public lands in New Mexico. Features are recorded using Global Positioning System (GPS) tools with ArcGIS software. The data is then downloaded to a master ArcGIS file and into a BLM database. Most of the survey work is done on foot in terrain that is often steep and extremely rugged. Crews will identify metallic mineral districts for survey and methodically walk the area searching for features such as adits, shafts, trenches, structures, and waste dumps.
The crews are based in the Las Cruces District BLM office in Las Cruces, NM but will be working statewide.
This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.
Goals, outcomes, and deliverables: Participant will create an inventory on abandoned mine features in New Mexico by collecting data on GPS units. Data is transferred to databases. Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.): Participants will be trained in the use of equipment, field safety, UTV’s by the BLM Project Manager. Each will be paired with experienced personnel. All field work will be coordinated with BLM Project Manager. Physical/Natural Environment: The participant will be based in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The City of Las Cruces has a population of 100,000 and is the home of New Mexico State University. It has a friendly, diverse population and access to recreation in nearby mountains. Work Environment: The GeoCorps participant will be based in the Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District Office, although most of their time will be spent in the field in various parts of the state. These work areas are often quite remote in steep rugged terrain. Summer temperatures can be in excess of 1000 F. Required Qualifications:
•College coursework and field work in the sciences, natural resources, environmental management, physical geography or related fields.
•Ability to hike to/from and work where abandoned mines are found, including remote areas with difficult terrain and extreme climates while carrying sufficient amounts of water, food, and field equipment.
•Ability to travel and work successfully in unexpected field conditions involving such weather extremes as rain, high heat in the desert or cold temperatures and snow in the mountains.
•Ability to work both independently (in the office) and as part of a field team.
•Good communication and organizational skills.
•Ability to commit to a minimum of three months of work.
•Valid driver's license and good driving record.
•Ability to pass government security background clearance
Desirable Qualifications:
•Experience reading and navigating by topographic maps, compass, and Global Positioning System (GPS).
•Experience entering, managing, and analyzing data with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), databases, and/or spreadsheets.
•Experience with library and internet research.
•Familiarity with driving four-wheel-drive vehicles.
•Availability to work more than three months
