Position Description:
The Geocorps participant will work in both the locatable minerals (such as gold, silver, etc.) and salable minerals (such as sand and gravel) programs for the Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO). These programs directly deal with exploration and mining efforts that involve federal mineral estate, in which BLM is responsible for managing. Applicant will be responsible for primary work functions, as well as supporting other minerals and natural resources staff. Primary responsibilities under the locatable mineral program, will include: • Conducting inspections of exploration and mining operations, both small and large scale • Respond to public inquiries involving mining law, mineral ownership and operations Primary responsibilities under the salable mineral program, will include: • Conducting inspections of mining operations and collection areas, both small and large scale • Assist with production verification of mined material at these sites, which will require utilization of a photogrammetry process Additional responsibilities may include, but not be limited to, the following: • Assisting with trespass investigations in both programs • Providing geology/mineral information for various educational opportunities that BLM provides in the area • Data entry • Report writing • GIS • Use of Microsoft Office • Use of Agisoft Photo Scan and Global Mapper • Various training requirements

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
Project mentors will work with the participant to guide their projects, introduce them to the work and mission of the BLM and other federal agencies, and broaden their network of professional contacts, all while giving the participant a high degree of autonomy over their work.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
This work will provide a challenging and meaningful experience to the participant. The participant will gain experience navigating a professional workforce, the opportunity to exhibit their technical skills and knowledge, apply these skills to current management challenges, and produce plans, data, and/or educational materials that will help direct the management of BLM properties. Participants will also have the opportunity to gain further training in technical skills related, and adjacent to, the field of their project.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The Royal Gorge Resource Area encompasses the eastern half of Colorado. The terrain changes with the geology from flat grasslands to the steep, uneven terrain in mountains, but rolling hills with uneven terrain are dominant. Summer in Colorado can be very hot, but weather can change quickly.

Work Environment:
The participant will work out of the BLM offices in Canon City, CO.

Qualifications:
• Experience with computers and GIS is required. Any background with mining and knowledge of photogrammetry is considered favorable. Applicant must be able to work in both a team environment and individually, as well as able to work with the public. • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. • A government security background clearance will be required prior to starting this position. • NOTE: Candidates with greater than 12 weeks of availability may be given preference, as there is a possibility this project may be extended (This position will last for a minimum of 12 weeks (3 months), but there is potential for the project to be extended for additional weeks or months. If the project is extended, additional pay will be provided).

Vehicle / Driver's License Requirement (If applicable):
A personal vehicle is highly recommended for increased personal flexibility and access to opportunities. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Position Duration: 3-6 months (or more)

Hourly Wage: 14.58/hr

Housing Details:
The participant will be responsible for finding her/his own housing. A personal vehicle is recommended.
