Position Description:
Participant will be part of a diverse interpretive/educational team at Mount Rainier National Park. Primary duties include attending training, providing public sky viewing experiences via telescopes, interacting with the public at information desks, and planning and presenting astronomy related interpretive programs. Details of position duties: • Attend Mount Rainier Interpretive and Resource Training (two weeks following Memorial day.) • Independently operate a telescope or astronomy binoculars (NPS or self owned, if preferred) for the benefit of the visiting public as part of our stargazing evening sessions. • Work in cooperation with and be mentored by our astronomy volunteer team that includes a college astronomy teacher, retired science teachers, and local astronomy society volunteers. • Work with an experienced National Park Service interpretive coach who will assist the intern to develop and refine programs according to National Park Service guidelines. • Research, develop, and present the following: • A 10-15 minute talk about astronomy and/or Natural Lightscapes that relates to Mount Rainier National park and/or an Astro-Junior Ranger program (30-45 minutes) for children aged 6-11. • An evening (PowerPoint) program of 45 minutes in length that helps visitors connect to Natural Lightscapes/Dark Skies resource meanings and the related wilderness experience preserved at Mount Rainier National Park. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program. The position runs for 12 weeks beginning the Tuesday after Memorial Day. The AstroCorps participant will work as a team member of the Mount Rainier National Park’s Interpretive Division. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program.
