Position Description:
The participant will work with the park’s Science Advisor and Skagit District Interpreter to communicate park science to park visitors through hands-on citizen science, evening programs, and educational activities. The participant’s work will focus on the Cascades Butterfly Program, a volunteer-based program that monitors the distribution and abundance of subalpine butterflies. Butterflies are sensitive indicators of climate change and monitored in many places across the US and Europe. The Science Engagement Specialist will monitor butterflies with volunteers two days per week and will work two-three days on science engagement. The Skagit District Interpreter will work with the participant to develop programs to communicate the science to park visitors and engage them in the park’s Climate Change activities. The participant will also assist in training new citizen scientists in butterfly monitoring and will create one educational or outreach program of their own combining their research and science communication skills.
