Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will assist with geoscience projects in Yosemite National Park, and will work both in the field and in the office. The field portion will be spent assisting the park geologist with a range of rock fall studies in Yosemite Valley, including assessing geologic hazards beneath Yosemite Valley cliffs, documenting rock fall events as they happen (Yosemite typically experiences several rock falls each winter/spring), developing the park's rock-fall database, and working with remote sensing data to quantify the distribution of rock-fall deposits. Fieldwork may also include mapping and sampling of glacial deposits to determine the Last Glacial Maximum ice extent in Yosemite Valley, retreat of modern glaciers, and subsurface trench investigations to determine the sedimentation history of Yosemite Valley. There may also be tasks with a hydrology and/or sediment transport component. Field outings may include long hikes and days in less than ideal conditions (rain, hail, snow, high winds) with the possibility of backcountry overnights. In the office, the participant will organize and compile data, draft digital maps in ArcGIS, and assist in geologic report writing. Developing written content for the web and other media is also a possibility. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program.
