Position Description:
THIS WAS A WINTER POSITION THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY FILLED. APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED. The position will for provide quality assurance and resources monitoring during the implementation phases of the barrier island restoration component of the Mississippi Coastal Improvements Program (MsCIP), expected to begin construction in Fall 2014. A significant component of the MsCIP involves restoration of the GUIS barrier island sand budget and transport system to mitigate substantial erosion caused or exacerbated by navigation channel dredging near the park islands in Mississippi. The restoration will consist of placement of approximately 20 million cubic yards of suitable sand material on West Ship and East Ship Island by dredging construction companies contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This position will conduct the NPS monitoring of the project to ensure that the placement meets NPS policies and guidelines for barrier island restoration, and ensure that natural resources such as nesting shorebirds and ospreys and relic dunes, and cultural resources such as archaeological sites are protected and not impacted during construction. The incumbent will work closely with the MsCIP construction contractors and park staff. Instruction on resource monitoring protocols will be provided. The incumbent will review existing data including sediment analyses (from beach samples, benthic grab samples and vibracores), benthic invertebrate surveys, and geophysical surveys. Based upon these data analyses, modeling studies and other available information, the incumbent will determine whether the implementation of the project is following the NPS approved plan. At all times during project, the incumbent will maintain communication between NPS (GUIS, SERO and WASO Natural Resource Stewardship and Science (NRSS) and USACE (Mobile District Office) to inform NPS of progress on the project. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
