Position Description:
The Pliocene deposits of Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument (~3.2-4.2 million years old have produced tens of thousands of fossils representing a diverse paleofauna. On-site collections house over 60,000 specimens ranging from small rodents to mastodons. Rodents and amphibians make up a large portion of the material collected, but carnivorans, rabbits, birds, fish, turtles, snakes, invertebrates, and larger mammals (e.g., mastodon, horse, ground sloth) also occur frequently. As a museum technician, the Geocorps participant will work closely with the parks paleontologist in ensuring the proper curation of these fossils. The participant’s primary duties will be fossil cataloging and data entry and the rehousing of specimens. They will also be cataloging modern specimens housed in the collections and may be asked to assist in other duties, including the updating of the library database. Based on experience, the participant may also engage in digitization of specimens for an online database and/or fossil preparation, but the participant will not receive training in those additional areas of work. This is not a research position. When weather permits, and if needed, the participant may also join the park’s paleontologist on field surveys.
