Position Description:
The natural and cultural resources at Petroglyphs National Monument (PETR) have been impaired due to increased climate variability and human activities in and around the park. Heavy rains recently have had impacts on PETR trails with significant erosion, gullying, and head-cutting during intense precipitation events, notably the September, 2013 monsoonal storms that affected large sections of the Southwest. This resource destruction threatens archeological resources and the Monuments ability to serve the visiting public. The successful applicant will use a variety of remote sensing techniques, including photogrammetry and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques. The applicant will also research erosion resistant trail construction and erosion mitigation measures and present potential trail reroutes and construction recommendations for PETR’s Visitor Use (Trail Management) Plan. Applicants, through a combination of field and office work, can expect to develop an improved understanding of remote sensing techniques and become familiar with both natural resource and cultural resource preservation and management practices. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
