Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will assist with ongoing projects relating to the geologic and paleontologic resources of the monument. Primary areas of emphasis for this position will be selected from some of the following projects based on the selected applicant's strengths, experience, and interests: Annual monitoring of the monument's fossil sites including condition assessment and photography (possibly utilizing photogrammetry); assist with coordinating a small excavation; prepare, conserve, and catalog specimens of fossil leaves and insects in delicate shale; photograph the monument's fossil collections to provide scientific documentation; develop interactive technology and other activities that will link the paleontology lab to the exhibit area and other media; and develop a database and maps to document previous collecting sites. Other projects may include some of the following: inventory of collections; database entries; preparing educational information about paleontology for visitors; preparing maps in GIS; and assisting visiting researchers. Specialized projects may be available for those having self-sufficient experience in photogrammetry or GIS, or those with a background in museum studies, fossil conservation, paleobotany, paleoentomology, paleoclimatology, or related fields. The participant may have the option to use a portion of their time for research if they have a research plan defined and approved beforehand. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program and support from The Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds. Two participants will be selcted for this position under this description at this location during this season.
