Position Description:
This position will focus on protecting paleontology resources by determining the processes responsible for fossil loss within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Natural erosion and human-induced changes to the natural environment (lake level fluctuations, grazing, and theft) are affecting paleontology resources in currently unquantified ways. The successful applicant will help create and implement a project to measure rates of natural erosion for one of the various rock types found in the region. These include the highly erosive Cretaceous Tropic Shale and Triassic Chinle Formation mudstones, and the rock-fall-prone Jurassic Navajo Sandstone. Assessing theft of petrified wood is another project possibility. The position will include both office and field work. The field portion will be spent assisting park staff with paleontology site monitoring, geologic data gathering, and establishing erosion monitoring sites. Travel by boat and plane may be required to reach sites. Field outings may include long hikes and days in less than ideal conditions (heat, sun, monsoon storms) with the possibility of backcountry overnights. Erosion monitoring protocols, a final report, and written content for the web and other media will be produced by the applicant. Presentations to park management and law enforcement may be requested. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
