Position Description:
Positions will assist the paleontology program at Dinosaur National Monument (DINO) in the second phase of a multi-year project to produce an interactive website focusing on the Carnegie Quarry, one of the largest dinosaur quarries in the world & the site for which the Monument was created in 1915. This interactive website, designed for public & scientific use, will cover all aspects of the excavation, paleontology, & history of the Quarry. [I] Carnegie Dinosaur Quarry Project: A large & comprehensive digital quarry map is in final stage of development and will be completed during winter 2014-2015. Map includes all specimens collected during the historic excavations (1909 -1924) as well as all 1500+ fossils exposed in-situ within the Quarry Exhibit Hall (QEH) . This map documents the location of thousands of bones belonging to about 500 dinosaurs, turtles, and crocodiles, and is the core of the interactive website. A great deal of scientific, historical, and excavation data exists for the map. Work will involve compiling & uploading data into database tied to the comprehensive quarry map. Data is diverse: 1) collection data [field numbers, repository, accession, and catalog data, species identification, bone identification], 2) excavation and laboratory preparation notes, 3) photographs [field excavation and museum collection specimens], 4) scientific publications, etc. PDFs exist for some scientific publications on specimens, but others need to be created. Some data will need to be researched and extracted from the scientific literature. Checking data will require working directly on the quarry sandstone face containing the dinosaur bones. Some 8000 digital photos of bones in the present quarry face already exist. Database will be used in making the map and data searchable by the public andscientific community once it is established on-line. [II] Other Paleontological Activities: A dinosaur bone on our Fossil Discovery Trail was partially stolen in 2014. These positions will enhance our documentation of fossils along this ¼ mile trail by improving the mapping and photographic record of the fossil resources. Documentation will improve monitoring of the trail. A gigapan photomosaic of the sandstone face to be mapped already exists. There will be limited opportunities to assist visiting paleontologists conducting summer field work in DINO, but none of those projects involve excavation. [III] Museum Activities: Assist Park Paleontologist with completing several museum reports on Dinosaur’s museum collection. This will involve locating specimens within DNM and contacting outside repositories holding specimens from DINO. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program. There are 2 positions available under this description at this location during this season. To be considered for either these positions, a candidate only needs to submit an application for this one.

If you have questions about the application and selection process, please contact GSA's GeoCorps managers.  If you have questions about any aspect of the position — description, qualifications, housing, dates — please direct them to the contact(s) listed in the project description.
