Position Description:
During the 2015-2016 seasons, Oregon Caves National Monument will implement a multi-site bat inventory effort aimed at documenting roost use, species diversity and presence-absence data. This GeoCorps Biological Science Technician position will be for 3 months. The Technician will work under a contracted project lead to assist in bat related data collection and will work under the supervision of a Resource Division staff person to assist in cave related geohydrology monitoring projects. Training for biological bat specific work will be provided. Training for geohydrology work will not be provided as applicants are expected to arrive with the required skill sets. This Geo Corps will need to utilize a variety of equipment (mist nets/harp traps, acoustical detectors, numerical databases) to conduct bat surveys at different sites including caves, sinks, and rocky features across a forest. Work may be conducted in remote areas, on uneven and rugged terrain, sometimes at night and will require safe behavior and First Aid/CPR certification. Equipment will be utilized for geohydrology projects (basic caving equipment, meters, sensors, and basic lab and chemistry exercises) in an underground environment. The work requires an ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment in the field, understanding of basic electrical and chemical processes, understanding of speleothem creation and dissolution, comfort working in cold, damp, confined spaces. The Intern would enter presence/absence taxonomic, geographic, and time of collection data from an SOU Biology Department museum collections into an Access database developed in conjunction with SOU so that past and future migrations of wasps, bees, and flies in response to climate change and other factors can be charted to determine which species may already migrating, which are likely to show up in the region, and which species in these insect groups are most at risk from extirpation. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program.
