Position Description:
Experience the remarkable classroom called Bryce Canyon National Park! Bryce is a geology park: a scientist's laboratory and child's playground. It is the uniqueness of the rocks that caused Bryce Canyon to be designated as a national park. These famous spires, called "hoodoos," are formed when ice and rainwater wear away the weak limestone that makes up the Claron Formation. Although the hoodoos' geologic story is not yet completely known it is closely tied to the rest of the Grand Staircase region and the Cedar and Black Mountains volcanic complex. Help write the story. Recent research indicates that conjugate fractures played a critical role in Hoodoo development. Analysis of these fractures, many of which are displaced, indicate an interesting timeline of tectonic events. We need to better understand this chronology. The 2015 GeoCorps Research Assistant will take field measurements to help determine which of the accessible erosional windows were controlled directly by the zones of weakness produced by the intersection of conjugate fractures. To answer this, the participant will (1) measure and document each accessible window in the park, (2) record in which stratigraphic layer the window occurs, and (3) show whether conjugate fractures are present in and near the window. The project will include both office and field work. The field portion will be spent working independently, with guidance from the park Physical Scientist, Park Geologist, and SUU Geology faculty. While helping in the field, the participant will ensure that the investigator is following NPS regulations, working safely, and has appropriate assistance from the park staff. In the office, the GeoCorps/GIP will write a report regarding the research project, noting any concerns. In addition, a project summary intended for the layperson, will be prepared. However, developing written content for the web, park newspaper, and other media is also a possibility. If individual has the knowledge and interest, presentations to a variety of audiences (e.g., college courses) may be assigned. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service's Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
