Position Description:
Participant will assist the paleontology program at DINO in the second phase of a multi-year project to produce an interactive website focusing on the Carnegie Quarry, one of the largest dinosaur quarries in the world & the site for which the Monument was created in 1915. Dinosaur is uniquely qualified for such an interpretive & scientific presentation. This interactive website, designed for public & scientific use, will cover all aspects of the excavation, paleontology, & history of the Quarry. [I] A large, comprehensive digital quarry map will be completed during winter 2014-2015. This map includes all specimens collected during historic excavations (1909 -1924) & all 1500+ fossils currently exposed in-situ within the Quarry Exhibit Hall. The map documents the location of many thousands of bones belonging to about 500 individual dinosaurs, turtles, & crocodiles. It is the core of the interactive website. [II] A great deal of scientific, historical, & excavation data exists for the map. Work will involve compiling & uploading data into database tied to the comprehensive quarry map. Data is diverse: 1) collection data [field numbers, repository, accession & catalog data, species identification, bone identification], 2) excavation & laboratory preparation notes, 3) photographs [field excavation & museum collection specimens], 4) scientific publications, etc. PDFs need to be created for some scientific publications. Some data will be researched & extracted from the scientific literature. Checking data will require working directly on the quarry sandstone face containing the dinosaur bones. Some 8000 digital photos of bones in present quarry face already exist. Database will be used in making the map & data searchable by the public & scientific community. [III] Participant will work as an integrated member of diverse team including other interns, park paleontological and interpretive staff, volunteers, & outside academics working on the Mapping Project. Members bring knowledge, skills, and abilities that are shared with the others to complete the project. The participant will learn new skills that will be applied directly to the project. Opportunity exists for participant to assist paleontologists with other field activities & help invasive species program at DINO by participating in multi-day white water trip through spectacular river canyons working on physical & biological control of invasive plants. This is a Mosaics in Science position. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
