Position Description:
Manassas National Battlefield preserves approximately 5,000 acres of rolling hills, forests and grasslands where the 1st and 2nd Battles of Manassas occurred. The Park is home to many different natural communities that support biologically diverse populations of flora and fauna. As the surrounding lands become urbanized by a rapidly growing population, the battlefield has become a regionally significant natural oasis. However, this increased urbanization also presents us with opportunity to reach out and educate the public about natural resources. In an age of technology where communication methods are expanding rapidly, the battlefield strives to provide information to the public in ways that are new and stimulating. The park would like to utilize a Mosaics position to develop digital media such as a cell phone application that uses real time GPS information to inform visitors of their location on the battlefield and its trails system, nearby points of interest and natural features, pictures and interpretation of flora, fauna and geological features that might be in the area, and designated tour stops along specific trails that contain audio and video clips that adhere to Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL’s). The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
